To Libby Mason, Mr. Right has always meant Mr. Rich. A twenty-seven-year-old publicist, she's barely able to afford her fashionable and fabulous lifestyle, and often has to foot the bill for dates with Struggling Writer Nick, a sexy but perpetually strapped-for-cash guy she's dating (no commitments -- really). So when Ed, Britain's wealthiest but stodgiest bachelor, enters the picture, her idea of the fairy-tale romance is turned on its head. Libby soon finds herself weighing the advantages of Nick's sexual prowess and tender heart against Ed's luxurious lifestyle and unlimited retail therapy. But when the diamond shopping commences, Libby is forced to realize that the time for "maybe" is up.
Taking romantic comedy to a hip, sparkling new level, Mr. Maybe is a classic tale of what happens to one girl when her heart and her head aren't looking for the same thing. With a laugh a minute and a heroine whose struggles in the dating jungle will remind you of your own, Mr. Maybe is a story that will leave you smitten.
There’s not much to the plot. Our heroine, Libby, works in public relations, owns a small London flat, and has terminally bad luck in love. Over the course of the novel, she is presented with the choice of two dissimilar men, Nick and Ed. She has great fun with Nick, he makes her laugh, and the sex is great, but he has no money, his friends are left-wing radicals, he lives in a grotty bedsit in Highgate (I have no idea what that means, but it sounds godawful), and he is allergic to commitment. That’s okay, though, because Libby tells herself that she can just enjoy a physical affair without becoming emotionally involved. Yeah, right. Then, at a weak moment, Libby accepts a date with Ed McMann, a fabulously wealthy investment banker who is looking for a wife. He isn’t terribly attractive, he’s a bit on the stuffy side and he can’t kiss worth beans, but he’s the Mr. Right every woman dreams of, isn’t he? Maybe not.
If you can’t tell which man Libby will end up with, you might want to come in out of the sun and clear your head. Sex and laughter win out over money every time, don’t they? And it is mildly entertaining watching Libby realize this, but it isn’t necessarily enough to justify the hardcover book price. Green’s chatty, first-person narrative treats the reader like Libby’s newly found best friend, and in fact the relationship that Libby has with her real best friend, Jules, is the highlight of the novel. It’s gratifying to read about women who support each other through thick and thin, and who can be counted on to tell each other the truth even when it’s not pretty.
But in 350 pages, I was looking for more plot than what I found -details about Libby’s work, family dynamics, interesting secondary characters, or entertaining, unusual events. But the story remained fairly simple and straightforward - the no-brainer choice between love and money. Also, I couldn’t help feeling that Libby is rather a shallow creature who is more concerned with designer clothing than anything else. On the other hand, I sympathized with her during the second half of the book, when she tries to rationalize her lack of strong feelings for Ed by convincing herself that it’s more important to respect your prospective mate, and to have a boyfriend who adores you, than to be madly in love with a man who is going to break your heart. We’ve all been there, done that, glad we found a clue.
When Libby meets Nick, lovely, funny, handsome Nick, there has to be a catch. Nick has problems with money and commitment: it seems you can't have everything.
Wealthy investment banker Ed, on the other hand, could be the answer and he seems to be crazy about Libby. Can she overlook his irritating habits, and his even more irritating moustache, and find true love? Libby has some serious choices to make. Can she make the right ones?
Libby Mason is a 27 year old, single woman looking for Mr. Right. Although Libby is attractive, smart and has a good job as a public relations assistant, she is tired of always being the bridesmaid and never the bride. Libby's perfect dream is to meet and marry a handsome and rich Mr. Right and live in a fancy home. When Libby meets Nick, a sexy writer, she quickly realizes that he doesn't meet her criteria for a mate. First of all, Nick has no money. And secondly, he lives in a crummy flat and has a pack of friends that Libby dislikes. Despite his flaws Nick is fantastic between the sheets and Libby finds herself falling for Mr. Wrong. Problem is, Nick has no intention of committing to Libby. When Libby meets Ed McMann, a wealthy and successful financier, she realizes that on paper Ed is everything she's been looking for in a husband. He is interested in getting married, he's successful, he has sacks of cash, he's powerful and well-connected. Ed is the Anti-Nick. Problem is, Ed is not handsome, he doesn't have a sense of humor and he has no sexual appeal. In a nutshell, he doesn't make her feel the way Nick makes her feel.
As Libby is forced to choose between two men and two lifestyles she has to look inside her heart to see what really matters.
Lol dat is wat er nu bij mij op Control V staat. (zit nu op school, waarschijnlijk was er voor mij een uur engels :P
